“The Shadow on the Stone” by Thomas Hardy

Written after the death of Hardy’s first wife. Though it lacks the gothic atmosphere other poems have, it still taps into the deep sense of loss and wistfulness interpolating his thoughts as he envisages his wife’s ghostly presence nearby to comfort him. It’s so sweet, you may need to grab a tissue!
